The Future of Hitman Under Fire

Square Enix, long time owner of developer IO Interactive, creators of the widely acclaimed Hitman series have announced today that they will quote “withdraw from the business of IO INTERACTIVE A/S”.

Square Enix cites “extraordinary loss” as the reason for this. Seemingly the outrage at Hitman’s episodic iteration was more than just the grumblings of disgruntled fans. This throws rumours of the second season of episodes into extreme doubt and furthermore the future of the IP itself.

At this time we know very little. Square Enix has said all they’re willing to say on the matter and for now, we’re going to have to wait and see. Of course, speculation abounds as to who will take over IO INTERACTIVE and the subsequent Hitman IP or indeed if Square Enix is making a deal to keep it though given the cited poor performance it can be assumed they won’t.

Square Enix has stated that they’ve “started discussions with potential new investors and is currently in negotiations to secure this investment.” So we can at least conclude that the series has a future, albeit an extremely unclear one. Precisely what form that future will take will hopefully be revealed shortly and when it is, we’ll ensure you’re the first to know.
