Infinity War Review – From a fan’s perspective

I finished watching the Avengers: Infinity War film 2 hours ago. After I finish writing this I’m going to need to lie down. It was good, really good. The only negative (a positive for me) is that the film acts as an episode in a series, rather than a stand-alone film. Critics will argue that the pacing is rushed and that you need to have seen the other movies in order to appreciate the film. That’s true, but as a fan that has been reading theories about this film, rewatching the previous films and obsessing over the little details for years, it’s exactly what I wanted.

The Russo brothers have managed to create a film which feels like something that could only happen in a comic book. The number of characters in the film is astounding. That being said, don’t go in with only one favourite character, as individually they probably won’t get much screen time. This movie needs to be viewed as a part of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The creators of the universe have finally stopped trying to appease general audiences and have created a movie entirely for the fans. Instead of small references to other movies, similar to the first 2 Avengers films, this feels like a continuation of those previous movie’s plots. I applaud their bravery, as this will not appeal to casual moviegoers. The movie doesn’t take the time to explain who all the characters are or where all the plot threads are coming from. You need to have seen at least the original Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War and the end of Thor: Ragnarok in order to have any clue as to what is happening.

I feel privileged to have been able to watch the film with a full theatre of fans, gasping in shock or cheering when a new character appeared on screen. The time flies by, it doesn’t feel like 2 hours and 40 minutes.

It’s going to be a long wait for Avengers 4, however the upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel movies should help fill the time.
