There have been a lot of mysteries throughout the Naruto series that we will most likely never get answers to, one of them being the life of the fist Hokage, Hashirama Senju.
Hashirama was the only known shinobi born with the ability to use wood release throughout the series, making him incredibly dangerous.
Born during the Warring States Period, which we also know little about, Hashirama was the man to unite the Senju and Uchiha clan, who had been at war with each other and sworn enemies since the time of Ashura and Indra.
As a result he created the idea of the hidden villages alongside former enemy and then friend Uchiha Madara, who both became the founders of Konohagakure (Konoha).
Other than all of this and his battles with Uchiha Madara later on, we know little else about his life and considering how important and strong he was, that’s surprising.
Hashirama was one of only two men to ever be named the god of shinobi, he mastered not only wood release jutsu’s, but he also was capable of controlling all the Tailed Beats at once.
So what do we not know about him exactly? Well first of all his involvement during the first and second great shinobi wars, or if he was even alive during either of them?
Well to be honest we don’t really know, as all we do know is that his younger brother Tobirama Senju, was Hokagae at the time of the first great war.
But why I think the first Hokage may have already been deceased by that time is because, when Tobirama sacrificed his life so save Danzo and Hiruzen as well as the rest of their team, he gave the title of Hokage to a teenager in Hiruzen.
Yes Hiruzen became the longest serving Hokage, was the second man ever be titled as shinobi god, trained the Legendary Sannin and was a prodigy at the time, but he was only a teenager when Tobirama passed down the role of Hokage to him.
Plus we have to remember that this Passover happened during the first ever great shinobi war, how would this have been a good time to make a teenager in charge of everyone, when you had your former Hokage still around?
Hashirama shouldn’t have been that old around this time and even despite he himself believing that he wasn’t the greatest leader, how could someone of his abilities and strength not be the first option? Especially during war times.
So if we presume that he was already dead by then, what in god’s name killed him? If he was in fact dead by this point it couldn’t have been through natural causes, so he had to be killed, but how?
He wasn’t called the god of shinobi for no reason and the only man capable of challenging him was Uchiha Madara, who at the time was hiding in a cave believed to be dead.
So who could have killed him? And if he was killed by someone then how do we not know about it? Especially who they were or even when he died. As I am sure whoever killed him would have been reanimated during the fourth great war, considering his strength.
Therefore, I assume he wasn’t killed by a shinobi, so why wasn’t he picked to replace his brother until the war had ended at least? It just doesn’t make any sense.
It is possible that Hashirama was heavily injured during his battle against Kakuzu, when he tried to assassinate the first Hokage.
Hashirama’s injuries may have been so severe that he may have been unable to take part in the fighting, and so that’s why Hiruzen may have been the better option for Hokage.
We don’t know much about the battle between Kakuzu and Hashirama but it’s safe to say knowing Kakuzu’s strength, that he was not easily beaten.
All of these questions I’m sure has puzzled Naruto fans for years, but there is one more question I have, what type of Sage Mode does Hashirama wield and who taught it to him?
As we do know Hashirama Senju was able to use Sage Mode as we got to see in his fight with Madara and in the fourth great war, but it looks very different to the Sage Modes we know through Naruto, Minato, Jiraiya and Kabuto.
So we have to assume that the first Hokage acquired his Sage powers through a different source, so how and where from?
At the moment we don’t have the answers to any of these questions, but with Masashi Kishimoto promising Boruto to be even better than Naruto was, and that there will be more side stories and spin offs in the future, we may yet learn the answers to these questions about the God of Shinobi and the first Hokage, Hashirama Senju.
