Spider-Man: Homecoming swung into theatres this weekend. As a longtime Spidey fan, it was pretty much everything I wanted. You can read Georgia’s review of it here on Nerds4LifeBlog. Today I’m going to talk about the various easter eggs and references, both to the comics and the larger MCU.
One of Adrian Toomes’ (Michael Keaton) buyers was Mac Gargan (obviously the Vulture is significant but I’m talking about less prominent characters). To those unfamiliar with the comics, he’s just another thug, but to Spidey fans, he’s longtime villain the Scorpion. Mac Gargan was a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to follow Peter Parker and find out how he got such great pictures of Spider-Man (spoiler: he fails). Jameson then volunteers Gargan as a test subject, where he is given a suit that grants him scorpion-like abilities. JJ hopes he will defeat Spider-Man, but the chemicals drive him insane and he becomes a supervillain. There is a subtle hint to this future in the scorpion tattoo on Gargan’s neck, clearly visible in the mid-credits scene.
