SPOILERS for Game of Thrones Season 7 episode ‘Dragonstone’ and the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Game of Thrones is no stranger to controversy, however, the creators were probably not expecting backlash towards something as innocent as a celebrity cameo.
While the show has had other celebrities make appearances, this one upset the audience for being ‘too obvious’. Even viewers who are not fans of the singer were able to recognise Ed Sheeran, forcing them out of Westeros and back into our reality. Viewers were also upset due to the attempts at getting some of Sheeran’s huge fan base to give the show a try. However, I don’t think the cameo was as bad as fans are suggesting.
The first reason is that it allowed a warm moment to occur in an otherwise cruel world. Arya Stark meets Ed Sheeran’s character and the other members of the Lannister army while she is travelling away from The Twins (where she just murdered almost everyone) and towards the Queen. Arya has had an increasingly difficult time since she left Winterfell and this allowed fans to see the rare view of a relaxed and peaceful Arya.
