Jessica Jones – First of the defenders, Marvel ventures into Netflix

Hiya fellow bloggers!

Hope y’all are having a great weekend! Today, I bring you my review of the Netflix original series, Jessica Jones. So let’s get started!

Now, we’re all aware of Marvel’s hold on the big screen with the Big Green Guy and his gang getting ready for the smashdown that is going to be The Infinity War. And while we wait, the franchise decided to let us in on the adventures of the underdogs of the city of New York – a group of four vigilantes who are being called The Defenders.

Now, I’m a huge fan of the Marvel franchise despite not having read the comics, and was super excited when I heard about this venture of theirs. I got hold of the episodes as soon as I could and began watching the stories of each of the Defenders, starting with Jessica Jones.

Jessica Jones– private investigator, part time cynic and full time badass. Played by the amazing Breaking Bad star Krysten Ritter, this slight and eerily strong (I’m not kidding, she’s got super-strength) character will blow your mind away.

The show follows the life of Jessica Jones as she goes up against her enemy and ardent admirer- another mutant who will mess with your minds with his power and the sick ways in which he exploits them- Kilgrave. Everyone’s beloved Doctor Who star, the talented Scottish actor David Tennant portrays the role of this villain and he did such and amazing job that I will go as far as saying that you should watch it for him, if not for anything else. Kudos, my man. (You will despise him and that, I think, is the best part)

The show also gives us a sneak peak into the life of another one of The Defenders, Luke Cage, which, we come to see, is deeply intertwined with Jessica Jones and her terrible past. Other notable characters include Jones’ best friend, Trisha Walker; the typical “normal” sidekick and ex-junkie, Malcolm Ducass; and another genetically enhanced hero/anti-hero Will Simpson (aka Nuke in the comics).

In true Marvel fashion, there is a lot of action and excitement packed into each of the hour-long episodes, making it impossible for you to not binge. (Well done, guys. Well done). The story takes a lot of unexpected twists and turns, building the pace and a solid background for each of the characters with each passing episode, and ends with a fairly satisfying finale.

And as is with anything Marvel, the show also subtly deals with issues like PTSD, child abuse, etc., and the questions about one’s self plaguing every single one of us, without letting it completely dominate the story-line.

In conclusion, Jessica Jones is a must watch if you’re into Marvel and is definitely in my Top 5. It was also a great way to set off into the story of The Defenders and I can’t wait to get started on the next vigilante’s story!

Brownie points for the opening credits and the BGM!
