One Piece: Collection 42 DVD review

Spoilers for episodes 505-516 ahead.

This DVD set contains the original uncut animation, with both English and Japanese audio options and special features. One Piece looks best in high definition on a television screen.  Grab some popcorn and invite some One Piece fans over to watch the binge worthy episodes.

This collection deals with the aftermath of the Marineford war. The war has caused waves in the Four Seas, Grandline and the New World. It also shows the final episodes before the time-skip.

Special features:

Marathon mode:

Marathon mode enables you to watch an entire disk full of episodes while only seeing the opening song once. This means you can binge watch 2 and a half hours’ worth of episodes without needing to find your tv remote.

Warning: *This makes One Piece all the more addictive and I ended up watching both disks in one night without meaning to.*

Episode 506 commentary

This episode commentary was hilarious. It also made me feel nostalgic as I originally watched the English Funimation dub until I ran out of episodes to watch. Chris’ voice is iconic and it’s also funny to hear Zoro say things such as ‘that kid looks like a candy corn’.

When watching this commentary, you learn a lot about the two voice actors. My only criticism is that they started talking about how it would be impossible for someone to watch all the One Piece episodes -If someone is watching the DVD and listening to episode commentary, they’ve definitely seen all the episodes-

Voice over outtakes:

The collection also features a 10 minute and 50-second blooper reel of the voice outtakes. My favourite part was hearing Chopper say ‘Zoro got stuck in a chimney – Bitch’.

Episode 515 commentary

This episode commentary includes facts about the casting process for One Piece voice actors which I didn’t know about and the actors show a real appreciation for the show they work in. They also give some voice acting tips.
