Call of Duty World War II – Everything We Know

Call of Duty World War II - Everything We Know Call of Duty World War II - Everything We Know

It’s World at War remastered. That’s it. That’s all it is because Activision has no soul and couldn’t care less about this franchise as long as it makes them money.

It’s rather telling that, when googling the trailer to have another look at it before writing this, Google suggested “Call of Duty World at War II”. I have Google on my side COD fans, what do you have? Everything about it screams “I am everything you’ve already played but play me again because I’m shiny and 2017ny” and I can’t help but sigh. It’s just the annual COD release, it’s nothing new, it’s nothing interesting, it’s just another year of pandering to the focus group of 12-year-olds.

So. What do we know? We know it’s, at this stage, being told entirely from an American Perspective because that’s something new and different. We know that there’ll be lots of tanks because that’s something new and different. We know that there’ll be a lot of butch, burly men with high-powered weapons because, you guessed it, that’s something new and different.

To actually break down the trailer, there’s clearly an emphasis on the senseless waste of war and as much as I hate to give Activision credit for anything they might actually get this part right. We see genuinely terrified soldiers, seemingly actually affected by the constant stream of horrors around them. In an argument between two soldiers, one asks “How many casualties?” now correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe anyone in a Call of Duty game has ever asked that question. If Activision treats their virtual soldiers as more than just animated cardboard cutouts and gives them the slightest shred of personality then I’ll be dammed it might be something new to Call of Duty.

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Ultimately what you have here is Call of Duty World at War remastered. Now I’m not saying go forth to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter with pitchforks and torches I’m just advocating a little scepticism here. Let’s wait and see some actual gameplay before pre-ordering what could be the year’s biggest disappointment or a phoenix rising from the ashes of Infinite Warfare.
