The name Ragnar Lothbrok will forever be engraved in Vikings fans hearts, and so it shattered most them to know of the mans disappearance and fall from grace, after his loss in Paris.
Ragnar due to his failing in England, Paris and an addiction to an unknown substance, abandoned his family and his people for roughly ten years mid-way through season 4.
However, soon after his people finally discovered the truth about yet another son of his being in England, as well as the settlements slaughter, he returned.
Ragnar’s return was sadly unwelcome by not only his family but his people as well, despite him seeking revenge and the help from the both of them to accomplish it.
As we would soon discover, the raid to England would be his last but one thing has always puzzled me since his return as I’m sure is has for most fans, how can someone with the fame of Ragnar Lothbrok, just simply disappear?
Ragnar was king and arguably the most famous Viking worldwide, yet it was easy for him to just pick up his bags and remove himself from existence.
When Vikings creator and writer Michael Hirst was asked about Ragnar’s disappearance, he even sated that he had no idea where Ragnar may have gone.
“I don’t know where he went and I don’t know what he did when he went missing,” Hirst explained.
“I suspect he lived a fairly solitary life and he must have often contemplated suicide. However, that would be a big thing for a Viking, like it would be for a Catholic. A Catholic commits suicide and you can’t get into heaven. Vikings can’t do it because they can’t get to Valhalla because they haven’t died well” Continued Hirst.
So if the writer cannot even imagine where Ragnar could have gone, then all we can do is speculate.
As we know Ragnar was quite addicted to the unknown substance that he was taking during the first part of season 4, which changed him not only physically but also mentally.
During his absence Ragnar had to overcome his addiction, yet this should not have taken too long, as Ragnar had no way of making anymore and so there was no way that he could relapse.
In addition it was obvious to us that he had overcome the drug upon his return, yet we don’t know about any of his other actions.
Therefore, I personally believe he fled his own country, as staying there would mean that he would easily be recognised.
It is possible that he reunited with his traveller friend and moved from place to place humbly.
Remember Ragnar’s sons believed him to even be dead therefore, he couldn’t have possibly been recognised by anyone and being the most famous Viking in the world, he should have easily been recognised by his own people.
It is even possible that Ragnar returned to Paris and other countries as a hermit, instead of king Ragnar Lothbrok. One of the places he may have attempted to travel to could have been China in order to obtain more medicine, as he knew of it’s existence but had no knowledge of how to get there but then the attempt most likely would have failed.
Yet there are so many more possibilities, remember in real life Ragnar had there wives and twelve sons while in the series, we have only seen two wives and five sons, plus an unconfirmed son in Magnus.
It is possible that Ragnar may have wished to live out the rest of his life as a farmer again when he first fled, lied about who he was in a distant land and met a woman where he had more children with.
We must look into the fact that Ragnar had another famous son who is not in the series and furthermore became king of England and Ireland, in Halfdan Ragnarsson.
No! Now I’m not saying Ragnar may have remarried in his time away however, it is possible that the series could introduce yet another son or even all six who are not in the series, which may have possibly been conceived during that ten year absence.
Sadly we will most likely never know for sure where Ragnar went in his journey during that ten year period, yet we should assume it was quite far away and that overcoming his addiction would have been tough.
So I’ll leave it to you guys, where do you think Ragnar travelled to? Or what did he do in his time away? Please let us know in the comments below.
