Now before we begin, I need to point out that this entire piece is that of my opinion and in no way do I blame my dislike of Ivan on Alex Hoges, as he participation in the series thus far has been incredible but no matter how good the actor is, I simply cannot stand Ivar.
When Ivar first arrived as an adult in the series we watched a man in pain, trying ever so hard to be normal, respected and not disheartened by his unfortunate disability.
Ivar had honed his skills and had become a great man despite his disadvantages, still though no one respected him and instead pitied him, fueled by determination this Ivar continued to pursue greatness.
Immediately we fell in love with him as we watched him struggle onto his fathers ship headed for England, where later Ragnar put his faith in his youngest son for revenge against the English, for that they had done to him and his people.
Much later on during the battle against King Ecbert’s warriors, it was Ivar’s plan that allowed his people to prevail, showing us that he has inherited the intelligence of his father.
With all of his accomplishments so far, even still I think Ragnar put his faith in the wrong son. Ivar has sadly shown much more than determination, Intelligence and bravery, but I don’t mean in a good way.
Immaturity, arrogance, unwilling to listen or co-operate with others and insubordination, all traits Ivar has shown us, which cloud over his few achievements.
We first see how little he is mentality stable whit his attempted to murder one of his family slaves, who would later be his older brothers Ubbe, future wife because he was unable to please her sexually.
No this is not someone who we should respect and is a pitiful act for someone who wants to be respected as Ivar The Boneless, more like Ivar The Spineless or as we discovered, Ivar The Bonerless.
From this point his constant lack of respect for his brothers led to the eventual murder of his older sibling Sigurd “Snake in the Eye”, for little reason other bickering, with Ivar usually prompting the arguments with Sigurd with insults and disrespect.
Before this Ivar continued to question his superiors in Bjorn publicly and attempted even to take control of the great army for himself to raid, instead of Bjorn’s wishes of peace now that they have legally acquired land from King Ecbert.
As result Ivar has spat on his fathers legacy and dreams, Ragnar in the series fought for the future of his people, knowing that they couldn’t raid forever.
He wanted land to farm instead of allowing his people to be butchered by endless slaughter and most of all, Ragnar fought for his family, which he put before anything.
Now Ivar has shown his true colours to the world, so lets see what that brings him. Hatred from his siblings, fear that he could snap at anytime and distrust towards him may all be the consequences for his pitiful murder.
Remember that Ivar cowardly killed his brother who was unarmed and unprepared, this is not the sign of a brave man who people want to follow.
As a result will the other warriors join his lead as he wished? I wouldn’t, how could I? The man murdered his brother in cold blood for little reason, why would anyone want to follow an unproven child who doesn’t even have respect for his family.
If thats how he treats his brothers then imagine the people he commands, the reason people followed Ragnar was because of not only Ragnars fame, but the respect they had for him.
Yes Ivar made one good plan that worked but that’s the only one positive thing he has, floating around in a sea of negatives.
Ragnar’s last plan is working well, find out what it was here:
